What are grounds for divorce in South Africa?

It is sufficient to show that the marriage is irretrievably broken down. The courts will accept that this is the case if both spouses confirm the fact where the divorce is defended, whilst only one spouse’s confirmation is necessary with an undefended divorce. It is therefore never a problem to convince a court in practice that a marriage has broken down irretrievably.
